Madam C.J. Walker

Madam C.J. Walker was born on December 23, 1867 on a plantation in Delta, Louisiana. She died May 25, 1919. Madam C.J. Walker grew up with her mom, dad, and older siblings. She was the only one in her family that wasn't born a slave.
When she was born her parents named her Sarah Breedlove. Her parents worked on a cotton plantation. Madam C.J. Walker is famous for inventing the hot comb and hair care products that straightened women's hair. Walker said, "God answer my prayer. For one night I had a dream a big black man appeared to me and told me what I needed for my product. The next day I put the mixer together and it worked".
She consulted with women all over the United States to buy her hair care products. She traveled all over the world to sell her hair products and help African-American women open their own businesses. Madam C.J. Walker was the first African-Amerian woman to become a millonaire.
Walker met with President Woodrow Wilson to make lynching a federal crime. After her death, she was the twenty-first African-American woman to be on the postal stamp.
